The Heir of NeMoren are met, the mighty Imix and his cronies destroyed, and the ritual stopped. diamondb.proboards37.com/index.cgi?board=playing&action=display&thread=31&page=61#1967But moments after saying farewell to Andric, Bertram, D’nar, Ian, Tocs, and Alinar, the “beggar” appears! As Caldor may have suspected, his old rags turn to fine, if somewhat alien, clothes, and before you stands Jacque Valour! With a snap of his fingers, he whisks you away. You find yourself in some sort of ruined palace “Zey cannot find us so easy here. Zis place is full of lead.”“I arrived just after you left. I had not guessed Pallifax would make his escape, but of course he iz not the type to underestimate. The forces of the Mad Emir where powerful. It was all I could do just to rescue Pallifax.”“But at least we put a bee in their bonnet. And it looks like we gave you enough time to stop whatever it was they where up to. For know.” He leads you through the ruins. Speaking quietly: “As I said, ze forces of the Emir where powerful, I do not know if Pallifax will live”He leads you to the ancient elementalist. Pallifax lies on the floor, with a stone for a pillow. He doesn’t look good. “Yes, I knew you could do it. Now Caldor, there are some things I must tell you.”More Tuesday.

Caldor, there is so much to say, but so little time….
“…the ‘Heart of the Maelstrom’, there you may destroy those items you bear. But”
wheezing, gasping
“no, no healing will help me. Yes, there is a platform, at the end of it, you may cast away the items…but there is so much more to say.”
fading
“there is another. You are not the only one. Not the only”
he seems to liven up
“it is late. I have one last request. You must also cast my corpse. You must bear my corpse and cast it from the end of the platform”
he closes his eyes…..
…then opens them again and grabs Caldor
“You must cast it into the Heart of the Maelstrom”.
Then he dies.
Meanwhile. The others realize that Valinor is also there!
“I don’t know how I got dragged into this.”
Jacques indicates that you can spend the night safely here.
Update Tuesday. If you have questions AND you might want to prepare for the next day, this is a good time to do BOTH.

Galen to Caldor and Valinor: "I am so sorry for your loss. If it comforts you, his lone stand against the forces of the Emir are worthy of song and rememberance. What a valiant display of heroism, self-sacrifice and courage. We should all aspire to such noble deaths. I will pray to War for him, and suspect my prayers will be heeded. War looks favorably upon those who sacrifice themselves in this way. I have some healing arts - is there nothing we could do to resurrect this valiant comrade in arms? If so, just tell me and I will do it."
To Jacques Valor: Pallifax spoke of a Maelstrom. I have had visions of this place. Do you know where it is and how we might get there? I feel it is urgent, and important, that we get to this Malestrom as soon as possible.
To Job and the rest: And I agree, we must rest. I must recover spells.
(OOC: Dave I wanted to go ahead and get a post done, but don't have access to my character sheet right now. If its ok, I may post something later tonight about any changes to spell choices once I can take a look at my sheet, but for now, assume they will remain the same).

You spend the night in the ruins.
(I will just assume whatever healing that was needed was done, you are at full hp. If you want to change spells, let me know now).
Jacques: "You've seen it (looking at Galen)...I ave an idea. When you are ready...and it better be soon...take us (looks at Valinore), and you all, back to the Palace of the Mad Emir, to the place you first arrived here. "
Update Friday. Get ready to go, if you are going.

"Pallifax? Are you there? I think it's time to wake up, we need to get going. Pallifax?"
Red with embarrassment, "Everyone, I must apologize for my the behavior of my friend and lifelong mentor; we elementalists are sometimes lacking in the ways of social etiquette, nevertheless here in this strange leadfilled palace of Jacques Velour, it would be inappropriate to lie down and recline in front of my friends...we are after all, elves."
As Caldor slowly turns back to see the body of Pallifax, Caldor's head and neck a single mass of tense muscle, a sense of shock and disbelief ironing his face flat. "Pallifax? We accomplished your mission in your stead, we disrupted the ritual, and we slew the mightly Imix. You say there is another? You say I must deliver your corpse unto the Maelstrom? I never had a chance to exchange two words with you. Am I going insane?"
"Pallifax?"

After resting, Galen says: "Aye, I am ready - Valinore, you can take us back to the palace of the Mad Emir? I say we go, unless Caldor or Job has any objections. The sooner we depart, the sooner we can be rid of this evil thing (indicating the Axe)."
OOC:(Galen will keep his prepared spells as is).

Last wish of Pallifax? What are you doing about this?
You all gather and the platform. The three ‘wolves hold the key…and you find yourselves back again, under the humming mesh.
Jacques and Valinor leap of the platform. Even as they do, efreeti seem to appear out of thin air.
“Quick. Now take yourzelvs to the eart of the maelstrom. With ze key”
“It waz the best I could come up with. But you probably want to hurry.”

As the rest of the team heads towards the platform to teleport to the heart of the Maelstrom, Caldor wraps up Pallifax in his robes and carries him in his arms.
"I will perform funereal rites for you Pallifax, my mentor and foolish friend. You always were far too committed to your cause to know when to retreat. You thought you could handle the entire army of efreeti at the disposal of the Mad Emir, and live. I loathe your pride. But I despise the Mad Emir more, whose machinations imprisoned us many months ago, slew my comrades, and forced you to push yourself beyond your limits."
Carrying Pallifax, Caldor rejoins the Firewolves on the platform and touches the key. At the Emir's palace, after Jacques and Valinor have jumped down to engage the efreeti and protect our escape, Caldor says "Firewolves! Touch the key, and onward to the heart of the Maelstrom!"

To Jacques and Vallinor: Thank you, friends for your aid. You have my gratitude and the gratitude of my Order for your aid in our efforts to destroy this abominable Axe.
Galen will quickly step onto the platform and will also touch the key. As he touches the key, he will think of, and concentrate on, the maelstrom from his visions.

You feel the lurch. For a moment, you see a rocky “island”, floating over a great swirling sea of fire and lava. Suddenly you stop. And are surrounded by fire!
A ring of it encircles you. Beneath you hard stone, some design was carved here, but has faded over the millennia.
It is hot.
You hear laughter.
(You can do a rounds worth of stuff).

Galen will look about, looking for two things: 1) the source of the laughter and 2) a likely place where he thinks he can throw the axe into the maelstrom to destroy it.
Assuming the source of the laughter is more than 10 feet away, Galen will shout to the party "stay close to me, I intend to cast a spell."
Galen will then cast blade barrier a "Wall of whirling blades up to 20 ft. long/ level, or a ringed wall of whirling blades with a radius of up to 5 ft. per two levels; either form 20 ft. high." Galen will choose a ringed wall. The radius will be 25ft (5ft X 10/2) and 20ft high. If the source of the laughter is within a 25ft radius, Galen would make the radius smaller. (His goal is to keep any enemies on the other side of the blade barrier.

Caldor places the body of Pallifax on the faded stone beneath us and casts a spell:
ONDO PARMA
(Stoneskin) on himself. Caldor looks directly up, thinking that he might next be able to cast Air Walk and get a better view from overhead, over Galen's whirling blade barrier.
"Friends alive and dead, keep your eye out for a structure that might hold a platform. Part of Pallifax' dying words described a structure off of which to cast our items...and his corpse." Caldor's ashen slate-face hardens to stone with these words.

The ring of fire is removed and through Galen’s ring of blades, the three Fire Wolves can see they are in a massive cave, which once may have had palatial features that now largely lay in ruin. Ahead of them there is a massive opening to a platform which leads out into the bright sky. Below, they can guess, is the Heart of the Maelstrom. They are not alone, a great beast-a half-dragon tyrannosaurus rex stands before them. Behind, Milos! Wizard companion of Caldor’s whose treachery is finally revealed. And hovering over them is Mallidar, the First Chosen of Pallifax! Mallidar lets them know what a hopeless situation they are in. And he seems to be right as he and Milos blast the party with cold and lighting, and the ‘Wolves try to figure what to do, including what to do with Galen’s blade barrier. At least the two orbs give some protection from Mallidar’s otherwise devastating magic. Eventually, Caldor and Job extract themselves…though black tentacles called forth by Milos complicates the matter. They also eventually remember: the body of Pallifax! Job engages the draconic dinosaur, and Caldor seeks to air walk out with the body, so that if all else fails, at least Pallifax’s last wishes can be kept. But things take a turn for the worst. Caldor is swallowed whole by the mighty beast! At this lowest moment, he remembers his decanter of endless water! Creating a gyser, he fills the creature’s gullet with water even as the decanter blasts out of his hand. The beast throws him up and he is free. But not in good shape. At all. Galen calls forth a noble and great Owl, but Mallidar counters with a powerful elemental. Job continues to fight the mighty beast even as he hopes not to get swallowed and Milos continues to hurl spells at them. It looks lost. Then the Owl grabs the body of Pallifax, miraculously evades the dinosaur dragon, and drops the body into the Maelstrom. Nothing seems to happen. Mallidar mocks them. Suddenly, like a phoenix, a burning Pallifax rises up, and hurls the traitor Milos into the Maelstrom. Galen joins Job in battling the beast, and a revived Caldor starts to call forth a storm. Pallifax then hurls the elemental away, and the draco-rex is finally brought down. The way is opened for the other items to be destroyed. First the axe is cast away, then one orb. Pallifax and Caldor vent their wrath on Mallidar, who finally meets his end in a fit of madness as the second and last orb is cast away. One item remains. The Key. But the battle is not quite over. Towards them, a massive flying carpet, at the front of which Jacque Valour and Valinore are bound. Also on the carpet are a band of efreeti, the leader of wich is massive, and insane: the Mad Emir. The efreeti nobles don’t expect to see Pallifax. Nor do they expect Pallifax to blast them and their carpet across the sky. Valinor and Velour are able to alight next to the Fire Wolves. With a bit of prodding, it is decided. And the Key is cast away. All hopes of freeing Tharizdun are gone, and those last leaders of the cult finally succumb to their madness. Meanwhile, after a brief aerial tour of the City of Brass, Pallifax shifts them all back to Castle Ravenloft. “Now I really must get back to my tower”
