The Tiefling rogue cocks his head quizzically at the sight of the masked ordinator and stares for quite some time a the golden mask as if attempting to divine some meaning from the newcomer's faceplate. After a series of long moments, Lucien utters "I don't know you from the Lady....friend." The last word oozes from his lips soaked in thinly veiled sarcasm. "What guarantee have we got you and yours won't try to put us in the dead book the moment we set foot out this here kip?"

General: Note Barts point 2
Buy and Sale: Gendar will pay 250 gp for the statue. He says he can get the disenchant ritual for 400 and transfer for 200.
The Map: The Well of Demons gets the drows attention. He seems very interested in whatever you may find there. The direction on the map leads down something called the Deep Stair, into another layer of the labyrinth. You think he gives you enough to find it, if you choose to do so.
The man in the golden mask:
“I speak for the Mages. There have been accusations of…murders. Many murders.”
Gasps in the Inn.
“But I am sure you have nothing to hide”.
Whispers in the Inn.
You leave with the Ordinator. Well, except maybe for Forge. Or Lucian, since no one is really sure what he is saying. He takes you into the Customs House, then into a musty room that may have once been well-appointed.
The mask is removed. Revealed is a black haired sour faced human.
“Why did you kill all those gray dwarves?”

PRIOR to Ordinator:
1) If no one raises objection, Bart will "buy" the Demon statue from the group. He explains that he needs a memento to return with to fulfill a promise. He divides 210 gold among the five party members, giving each 42 gold for his or her share of the Demon Statue.
2) Bart gives one of the healing potions that he brewed to Forge, and one to Zhuva in order that they may have some backup in a tight pinch. (He has one remaining for himself) "Use them well my friends. Some of Bart's special brew!"
TO THE ORDINATOR:
Bart speaks plainly and calmly, "There has been some misunderstanding, my friend. No murder was committed. At least not by us. Our group was involved in a recovery mission. Recovery of kidnapped Free People. Kidnapped into slavery. Why, our colleague Buckthorn over there had family and friends kidnapped in large numbers. Most of the village, was it not? And while searching for the kidnapped halflings, two other Free people, Forge and Zhuva over there were found being held prisoner against their will. We have no shortage of witnesses who can testify to this atrocity. I am certain that I need not remind you, sir of the Eight Laws."
He concludes, "What we did was necessary to prevent a grave injustice against many Free and Innocent people."

Lucien facepalms, shakes his head in disbelief, and quietly walks behind the others as they follow the ordinator.
Well, quietly that is, with the exception of a few choice comments muttered under his breath. "Damned clueless Primes" and "I even miss the bloody hive ward" (whatever that means) are the only two things that can be made out. Everything else is muttered too low to be really understood, not that anyone's listening.

Rafa remains quite. Note Bart’s points 1 & 2. ……………………………………………………………… The Ordinator nods his head. “Yes. Good.”“We of course do not indulge this sort of slave taking and are glad to see this…rough…justice. It’s clear that those responsible have been fully punished, and we consider this matter closed.
“We also have temporarily closed the Grimmerzhul trade post here in the hall. We look forward to it reopening when the Grimmerzhul are represented by those not tainted by this incident.
“Of course, there may be those among the duergar who will seek revenge. You have the full protection of our security while in the Hall. In any case, you seem capable of protecting yourselves.”His mood seems to lighten slightly, and he calls for refreshments. Iced wine is served from a silver pitcher. “I should properly introduce myself, know that I no longer speak as the mouth of the Mages, but only as one of them. I am Orontor.”Orontor may even attempt some small talk. However he seems to become slightly tense again as he inquires on your future plans: “May I suggest…look into the activities of the mage Paldemar. You will earn the favor of my brotherhood. Paldemar has not checked in for many weeks, and the few reports I have received of his activities in the Labyrinth have left me . . . uneasy. Help me, and the Mages of Saruun will owe you a debt of gratitude.”Then, the meeting seems to end (OoC: I’ll allow a few more retroactive questions, if there are any). Please post by Thursday PM

Forge decides he does not know enough of the situation to do other than follow his new comrades to their meeting. Forge thanks his comrade Bart for his gift. During the meeting with Orontor, Forge scowls and shoots intimidating looks but remains silent.

"Orontor, Sir. Is there anything you can tell us of Paldemar? His activities in the Labyrinth? Where he was last seen? A description of his appearance or interests or habits? It would assist us in assisting you."
"We are headed to a destination in the labyrinth that we believe is called the "Well of Demons." Is there anything relevant that you can tell us about this place or of the "Deep Stair?"
Bart thanks him for his hospitality and his time.

Buckthorn to Orontor, "I cannot necessarily speak for my comrades, but for my part, I should be glad to keep my keen eyes peeled for this mage, Paldemar.
You mention reports... I am sure you keep your secrets well-guarded and respect that... but can we see these reports or talk to the ones who made them? Or, barring that, can you tell us what is in these reports that has made you uneasy?
It seems there is much to make a man, er, halfling, uneasy in these labyrinthine caverns.

"Hmm, yes. Just rumours, really. If you do find anything, it would be appreciated"On the mention of the Well. He seems to pause. "You can easily find directions to the Stair. Yes, I am must be going. "He replaces the mask. The door is opened. Meeting is over. ................................................................................... Now What? Please post by Monday PM.

Zhuva (to Bart) Thank you for the thoughtful gift. I'm sure it will come in handy in a pinch.
(retro) Orontor's response doesn't address Bart's question about how to recognise Paldemar. Can Orontor speak to any defining characteristics before he leaves?
(to Orontor) Does he have any visible scars? An unusual accent? A particular scent? What does he look like? Does he wear an insignia? What message shall we deliver if we find him?

After Orontor leaves Forge suggest that we continue with our mission to save the slaves and if we happen to bump into some wizard, we'll cut him down like the rest.

Ahem, present company excluded .... I don't have the impression that he wanted Paldemar killed, just found. If he's up to no good, we can then zap him. :-) I agree with Forge. There is no reason to discontinue freeing slaves. Let us smite the rest of the underdwarves, then seek out Paldemar.

Bart likes the sound of the Well of Demons. "It sounds so.....homey."
"Yes. We shall locate Paldemar and have him show us his activities."
"To the Deep Stair and to the Well of Demons!!"
Aside to Forge and Zhuva, "If the Mages of Saruun are true to their word, there won't be much else to find back at the slavers' old haunt. I say we move on."

"Agreed. Unless there's any gear we need I suggest we head off. We shouldn't advertise our destination to too many other sods though. Can't let them know we're coming, now can we?

To Bart "Of course I meant the Well of Demons! Do I look stupid to you?" as Forge puffs up to his full 4'9" and stares up at Bart menancingly.
